THIS MONTHS LETTER TO BE MAILED ON NOVEMBER 9, 2007 * * * * * * * The S.O.S. Initiative Save Our Soap Initiative (Name Here) Address Here City, State zipcode Email address here (To whom the letter is being sent here) Address City, State zip code RE: November Operation I am most concerned over and extremely discontented with the current status of our soap operas on ABC. One only need look at the low weekly and daily ratings to understand that a change needs to be made. It is our hope that our regular pleas will effect this most necessary change and restore our ABC Soap Operas to the diverse, sophisticated, and well told stories that they were created to be. We are The Save Our Soap Initiative (SOS)! My name is (insert name here). Like many fans, I have been a viewer and supporter of ABCD sponsors for many years. During that time I have witnessed the steady and consistent decline of these once wonderful serials. The Soap Operas in which we have invested our years of viewing and supporting used to have diversity and an air of sophistication and credibility. Well written storylines have been replaced with those that are rushed and/or under developed, poorly thought out, unappealing, and just plain boring. Well developed characters with rich histories, ethnic and cultural diversity have been dismissed, written out, and in most cases just forgotten Soap Opera viewing is a hobby for many of us and is about whisking you away to a place you actually WANT to be, a life of glitz and glamour, true love, passion, beautiful familiar places with beautiful familiar people! For many of us, the hour or two a day we spend watching soap operas comprises the sum and substance of our entire television viewing! Daytime dramas, their actors, and storylines should receive the same care, respect, and attention to quality that other genres enjoy and should follow the same cultural and ethnic sensitive formula as well! Characters we have come to know are acting completely out of character. Their histories that we grew up enjoying, like favorite books are constantly changing and this is making the history worthless! There is no congruity, no consistency, no maturity, no wisdom, very few familiar characters, absolutely NO ethnic diversity, and certainly very little of interest anymore. Almost every major storyline is thick, thick, depressing, heavy, and tragic drama with horrible and horrific endings. It is rare that you see anyone smile on the shows anymore! Notice next time you watch...how many characters smile in the course of the show. It rarely happens more than twice. More often than not, you go through an entire show without one smile. How discouraging to tune into a middle of the afternoon and see such lower level mentality talk show type entertainment and dialogue that is actually scripted! All this from characters who are supposed to be of a higher social class too! Although trendy, constant sarcasm does nothing but be-rate, dehumanize, and causes those who use it continuously to look as if they are nothing but uncaring, arrogant, and disrespectful. Certainly not befitting of the social image in which their characters are attempting to convince us they exist. In my opinion, the soaps should be lighthearted and fun! A guilty pleasure! Yes, they can include death, angst, drama, tragedy BUT it needs to be in the SOAP OPERA Venue, with traditional high- brow, sophisticated characters. The dismissal and forgotten veteran characters and actors speak volumes to so many people on so many levels, and from so many stations in life! It represents the fact that those in charge are going the way of slasher movies, Howard Stern-ish casts, WWF type plots, and Springer-esque dialogue! This is a source of major consternation for us viewers, fans, and supporters! The lack of diversity on our shows poorly reflects the cultural advancement and enrichment of our society. It does NOT accurately depict our world and is an insult to so many who have struggled for equality! I certainly welcome change however, in the attempt to move forward, our soaps are following the incorrect leads and as such are losing their established histories, fans, cast, and viewers. The hearts of our shows have been missing for at least the past 3 years and they have lost much of their appeal. I do not like to watch nor do I like to listen to people constantly arguing, suffering, berating, and being just plain disrespectful. There is no longer a voice of wisdom or reason. The characters on our canvases are, twenty-something, thin, and primarily blonde. There is absolutely no intellectual appeal or heartwarming escape. There is no humor, no wit. Every storyline is infused with so much ridicule, agony, and bitterness towards others that the fun is difficult to perceive. Perhaps the show needs the low level talk show, trashy approach to improve their ratings. If they chose that approach I hope it works out for them for that seems to be what the executives at ABC daytime are saying the masses enjoy. Our once great soap operas now seem to resemble reality shows but their characters are lower class talk show guests with Judge/court show plots, angry MTV’ish young adult drama dialogue, all with the consistency, stupidity, unbelievablity, and simplicity of an infomercial. We implore you to restore our soap operas, our guilty pleasures, our hobbies to the greatness that their creators envisioned and maintained for so long. It is our hope that you will give pause and reflect upon the low ratings and chose to take a step back, reexamining the past successful formulas. YOUR NAME HERE CITY, STATE |
